Around 1908 (Forbin’s catalog states 1911), 4 different color stamps were issued. The stamps show implements to subtract sugar from the sugar palm tree, including a few of the fruits from this tree. There is no value indicated. The Thai letters on the bottom reads: Sugar Tax. The Blue stamp was issued with gum and the Brown, Red and Green were issued without gum. Perforation is 14.5 The printer is said to be Waterlow, Brothers and Layton.
A die proof, originating from the Peter Collins collection is shown also below.
These stamps were never seen used or on document till a few years ago, 1 stamp coming from the Len Colgan collection appeared in auction. The stamp seems to have a 6-digit number in Thai letters written on it. I have no idea about the meaning.
In addition to the cut out from the die proof shown above, a complete die proof of the red Sugar Tax stamp is known, it originated from the Peter Collins collection. Somebody in the past had somehow the Straits Settlements confused with Siam.
